Pros

Generous vacation time and paid parental leave, unlimited sick time, nice modern facilities, competitive pay if you come in with experience (not if you start your career here)

Cons

Where to start? I worked in Business Finance so I can’t speak for other areas, but it was far and away the most toxic, unprofessional work environment I have ever been a part of. Most people who work in the department look and act miserable day in and day out. People openly yell and use profanity in frustration all day long in a very open concept workspace (and the frustration is understandable). Data quality and IT infrastructure are a complete joke. A huge part of your job in Finance is attempting to resolve millions of dollars worth of system breaks. And by system breaks, I mean variances between subsystems and the ledger that you can’t figure out because it’s next to impossible to research. I’m not entirely sure how this place passes audit to be honest. It’s a very unstable job because they’re always trying to cut costs and headcount. There were numerous times in my time there where entire teams were done away with or the roles were offshored to India. In fact, since I’ve left I’ve heard the Business Finance function as a whole is migrating to India. And then they expect you to go over there for months to train the people taking your job. Turnover is extremely high, with entire teams including managers turning over within a year or 2. Many people left to go to the other investment bank downtown. If you decide to leave, it’s likely you will get the cold shoulder (and sometimes open hostility) from your manager and directors the rest of your time there. If you try to move to another team, your current manager will often block you moving no matter how unhappy you are so you can’t take another role. I saw people I worked with quit without a job lined up yet because they couldn’t take it anymore. Promotions are hard to get because of how political the process is and how much it relies on you having significant interaction with NY. To top it all off, management will read feedback like this and then honestly question why employee morale is so low and why the environment is so negative. I wouldn’t recommend this job to anyone and I wouldn’t go back for double my salary.
