Pros
Currently Technical Services at Epic. After more than three years here, the salary has become very very good, especially considering the cost of living in a city like Madison. Over the past few years, the strain on TS role has lessened to the point where 45-50 hours a week is common, at least on my team. Management still looks askance at you if you're putting in closer to 40. I feel that the work-life balance has improved. Great campus (though still overcrowded, and peak traffic in and out can take an extra 10 minutes to get into work). Great food as well. Healthcare is free after five years. Smart coworkers. You'll have some amazing folks on your customer teams that you'll work with occasionally. Nobody here is dumb, and people generally want to do good work and support customers well.
Cons
Your mileage may vary considerably stress-wise in the job, and it's based on two things: the customers you support (do they have their sh*t together?) and your team lead (do they have a realistic expectation for your work, and do they like you?). If you're an application TS, you're learning few technical skills that would be useful elsewhere. You start to feel pigeonholed here after more than 3 years. Consulting after Epic is a good option, but other than some project management experience there will be few transferrable skills in other industries. As I consider my next career move, I get more concerned with every month that passes. Madison's a great city, but you're chained to it. Few international or permanent relocation opportunities to go around. Every subsequent winter gets frustrating.
