Pros

Free parking - that is the only con I can think of

Cons

We were not allowed to speak with other social workers (the boss forbade it because she did not "like" social workers). It was a very toxic environment with the boss paging us all to the conference room - sometimes we would find out that someone was fired and sometimes we would find out that we got cake. We worked late hours but did not receive additional pay for extra hours worked and we do not utilize our counseling skillset at all. This is more of a job for a high school graduate than it would be for an LBSW or LMSW. They push you to work beyond your scope and put your license in jeopardy. Also a frequent refrain here from others was "if you leave, they will treat you the same". I can tell you firsthand that is not the case! As social workers, we need to advocate for ourselves and our unique set of skills. There are hospitals (mostly in Houston) that utilize us more appropriately (no case management and allow us to provide counseling - no DME, home health, etc.) During my time here, I honestly felt like a different person. Enduring such a toxic work environment spilled over into my personal life and I wasn't able to see the negative effects until I quit and went to a job with a healthy environment and supportive staff. Look elsewhere for a social work job - even if you go to another hospital in the area, chances are that you will be paid more even if you have to do case management (setting up home health, durable medical equipment like walkers/wheelchairs, faxing paperwork to companies, etc.) *Since Conroe Regional Medical Center is a hospital under the umbrella of HCA Healthcare and recently rebranded to be called HCA Healthcare Houston - Conroe, I am posting this review here and under the listing of Conroe Regional Medical Center.

Pros

There some flexibility with scheduling and they let you pick up as many shifts as you want and pretty much your own schedule.

Cons

Very poorly managed, chronically understaffed but managers are dismissive and deny it. The support from staff is inconsistent, the staff nurses are either fresh new grads or very bitter nurses who don’t want to help and expect you to handle everything by yourself as a tech. Most nurses here are PRN’s on contracts that get floated so it’s really hard to expect consistency in the staff you work with and build trusting relationships. Management will promise to train you as a unit secretary but will never follow up. They also agree to help you get opportunities for learning and growth but refuse to follow up or forget about it altogether, despite reminders. It’s not a priority. If your goal is to grow and learn more this is not the place. It’s running on fumes at 95% of the time. Very high turnover, we struggle to keep staff. They’ll call you in to pick up when they’re understaffed with no incentive or something minimal like “swag” (some gear). Very poorly compensated and you will not be appreciated for the hard work you do. Also it took 2 months for them to get me started despite numerous attempts to reach the HR, Management etc.
