A single cost-cutting decision at the C-suite level can eliminate your position overnight. There is no meritocracy here, just exposure to executive whim. If you are looking for career stability or a workplace that values retention, look elsewhere. The culture reflects the incentives — most employees have learned not to invest emotionally in the work, and you can't blame them. When leadership treats headcount as the first lever to pull every time earnings dip, people stop caring and start surviving.
