Good company at heart, but the amount of middle management is like a dragging anchor. - Anonymous employee Nokia Employee Review

Pros

Good benefits with health care (on site medical clinics), Performance shares, bonus (18.5% THEORY), car allowance, home working, free home office internet connection, good vacation allowance and free phones :) Excellent work/life balance in Finland, although this is changing, pressure to work longer is increasing Month off in summer (4 weeks) Good career opportunities, interesting work, networking get things done! Possibility to move sideways to new areas to take on new challenges. Opportunity to move to locations around the world. Multicultural teams, you really get to know how to work with different cultures (although management style is Finnish :)

Cons

People are caring less about the company. Too many failed promises and personal level disappointments. See the media for the walkouts last year in Finland. Morale is low, productivity is decreasing. As the company shuts down in July (holidays) we employ students to make it look like there are people still working in the office :) More and more external/temporary workers, who are later employed with tiny salaries. Bonus tied to company success. If the company does bad, no bonus (€2bn profit in a quarter can still be classed as bad apparently) Company does well, small bonus as the "complex and hidden" calculation method spits out small numbers...maybe there is a mistake in the code ;) Large. A lot of re-organizations, a lot of middle managers TOO MANY managers with teams of 3 or less people. There is absolutely no point in this. In some groups there are 70% managers!!! That leaves 3 people doing, with 7 people telling them what and when. SLOW decisions, SAFE decisions. Innovation is touted, but we focus on non value added technology, rather than focusing on enhancing the total user experience (Fastest 3g download, but clunky browser, 5mp camera, but take too long to start up etc etc) We have no idea of the total user experience, as its split into 15 different teams with 15 different managers with 15 different personal incentive targets. People live by the IIP (Individual incentive plan) "its not in my IIP so I cant work on it" is pretty common. Reports. Because the company structure is so flat, with networking the way to get things done, you end up dotted line reporting to a lot of people. You are always trying to persuade people to do work for you as the do-ers are in other teams!!
