Pros

- The people I worked with who made day to day time at work bearable (middle and lower levels, and leadership in EMEA only) - The fact that I managed to get out

Cons

Incase anyone reading the negative reviews think they're all as a result of the layoffs, I left at the start of this year and can confirm they are all true. If I could give it zero stars I would. CEO is a megalomaniac with a god complex, and rules the entire company with an iron fist. That culture filters down from there, with the leadership team in New Jersey having no clue how to do anything expect spend money like water catering to whatever whim the CEO had that day. I am not in the least bit surprised that they spent millions on a mandatory week long trip to Las Vegas then laid of 200+ employees a few months later- the way the company was spending money on booze and parties it was clearly not sustainable. Culture is corporate America so absolutely zero work/life balance, with examples on this front being set from the very top- who have no problem with Slacking company wide on a weekend or out of hours across the pond. People overworked and burned out across all teams and functions, with no support on this front. Hierarchal structure with no collaboration, just a "I'm the boss, do as I say" approach- even if you are more experienced in a particular thing. Dropped millions on new offices worldwide and an extended office space in New Jersey (with a cockpit themed new office for the CEO- you couldn't make it up) only to then force hundreds of employees back into the office on mandated days, despite the negative impact this had on employees happiness. Ex-global head of HR was horrendous, and responsible for many of the terrible decisions around culture. People partnering and support in the face of individuals personal circumstances or mental health was practically non-existent. HR was there to protect the company and nothing else, with severances being handed out like sweets rather than dealing with grievances or problems. HR outside of the US was completely different, but often over-ruled by their US counterparts who knew nothing of the law in that country. Strongly suspect that their HQ is in NJ not NYC intentionally as they have less laws protecting employees- company does not care about individuals at all, just the bottom line and the CEO's ego. 'Culture' was set from the top in the CEO's limited vision, and other regions simply had to line up and get on board with exactly the same. Local cultures or differences were disregarded, which is simply not sustainable for a company with that kind of global reach. Conversations around this were shut down and ignored. Leadership in EMEA was great and with buckets of empathy, but ultimately I think this is seen as a weakness by NJ leadership. EMEA leaders had barely any autonomy to offer the support or guidance they wanted to individual team members- a real shame and a waste of some fantastic leaders.

Own Company Response

We’re sorry to hear you’ve had a negative experience. For the vast majority of employees, OwnBackup is a great place to work and a highly sought-after place of employment. If fact, we have a candidate acceptance rate of less than 1% and have won several workplace awards, which factor in positive employee sentiment. Our customer satisfaction indicates that our Executive Leadership Team is doing a great job. OwnBackup has 4.96-star review on the AppExchange, and we’ve recently signed on our 5,000th happy customer. The decision to realign the organization was extremely challenging. We worked extensively with our Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors to refine our plans to best succeed in today’s market, and remain extremely positive about our future. Large internal events and employee offsites are an investment in our employees and are typically planned over a year in advance. We make decisions with the information we have at the time. As a company, we promote and empower our employees to own their own work/life balance. One of the ways we do this is through our unlimited PTO which allows employees to take time off as needed for their life outside of work. Another way we empower our employees is through our health benefits, which offer coverage of mental health services. We also offer employees free mental health assistance through our Employee Assistance Program in the US, and Modern Health in the UK. Thank you.
