Pros
- Good place to start a career, lots to learn on the job. - Quality of people around you is very high. - The name carries elsewhere (but only if you don't stay in P&G for too long). - Good quality coaching. - Comparable/fair packages (except if you move abroad whilst with the company). - Good rewards if you make it.
Cons
- Formal training is actually quite poor, but since nearly everyone has not worked anywhere else, they are unaware of this. - Pick your function carefully - the power moves around over the years, and junior marketers, though they start with a lot of accountability, also cover everything no one else wants to do. - Disparity between what you are held responsible for, and what you can actually influence. - Decision making is mostly on a group basis, and does not start until very senior levels (at which point many have lost the habit). - Promotion is based on length of service, ability to network and image. Results count too, but top performance is no guaranteee of success, and ability is not really assessed. - Very uniform personality types (classic ENTJs in marketing for example). If you don't fit the mold, you will struggle here. Suitable environment also for ex-consultants. - Deadline based environment is stressful for many.
