Pros

The customer contact experience was generally good and worthwhile. The co-workers were mostly nice. They hired me on the spot.

Cons

Low pay - like all retail. You had several equally qualified people in a department - so favoritism was rampant. Assistant store managers were like dictators - the store primary manager was generally competent/nice though. I took this job because I wasn't finding anything in my field. It was OK to fill in the gaps temporarily. The pay was about 25% of what I was used to making! Store assistant managers were basically pretty jerky and treated everyone like children - talking down to you, acting like they were the king of the world, etc. I was in a spring temp help job that was to last 4 months. The store apparently offered 2 or 3 people out of about 12 continued employment and they were no better than the others but likely were available to work more hours. There was a fair amount of turnover in management - there were 3 store managers there during the 4 months I was employed.

Pros

The Home Depot has a solid moral compass. They aren't about sacrificing their ethics for the sake of a sale, which I love. They also hire a diverse group of people and give a lot back to the community. They offer a lot of benefits and little treats for their employees. Although they push their associates to meet quota, they're realistic about what can and can't be accomplished.

Cons

Home Depot has two different sides to it. Store associates and those of us considered "store support" who are payed by the vendors but work in the stores 100% of the time. I constantly hear about how store associates are stressed out by management and their hours are being rearranged a lot, cut, and they often are stretched thin due to lack of full staffing. "Store support" associates who do merchandising have it better than those who work in specific departments. However, you never really gain knowledge unless you have the time to look things up and read packaging.
