Pros

The old standards: leadership, camaraderie, patriotism, travel ("see the world"). Also, to a great degree, the ability to control your own destiny--there are certainly some exceptions, but for the most part, the Navy is a giant meritocracy. Your success is in your hands, and more often than not, results are valued over most anything else.

Cons

Unfortunately, it sometimes seems that the final "pro" mentioned is diminishing at an ever-increasing pace. Also, when those exceptions to the meritocracy happen--the unearned promotion or the failure to promote the deserving--it can be quite disheartening. Also, all that travel takes you away from home, and "working hours" is a concept that doesn't really jive with sea duty...

Pros

It is what you make out of it. You'll have good days and bad days. It's all dependent on your leadership. That can make or break the command. Medical is free, but can take a while to get seen. You'll meet a lot of new people and could travel around the world depending on your duty station. Education benefits and training.

Cons

Medical can take a while to get seen, unless it's an emergency. If you're single, the pay isn't that great, but you don't have to much to worry about for bills if you live on base. If you're on sea duty billet, your work life balance will be terrible.
