Pros

- some of the best products in enterprise software, although lack of focus on them means the competition is catching up. - amazing engineering team, at least the old guard on the main virtualization products. - The company is making so much money from the cash cows that compensation and benefits are now pretty good.

Cons

The company has lost its way. - crazy and continuous management changes - tons of VP's who don't know what they are doing and have been recently hired and don't do anything or screw things up. - Morale is at an all-time low, even after some of these lousy executives have been fired in the most recent changes a few months ago. - They need to fire more VP's, but it is not clear that they (the CEO and the "new" SVP's of vSphere) have the guts to do that, or even a clear notion of who is good or bad, and why. - Promotions make no sense. - Nobody feels that what they do will make a difference. - New managers are hired in who are not qualified, not hard working, and are simply yes men and petty bureaucrats. - The passion and pride which brought us to greatness are being systematically crushed out of the company. - The CEO and the execs have gone on a wild goose chase after "the cloud".

Pros

VMware is a big company but in many ways had a startup vibe. That was great because the resources and infrastructure of a big company were there, but it gave most people I worked with freedom to work on many projects, influence, move around, and contribute in many ways. Plus, many things moved faster than they might at other companies of the same size. Perks were really great including bonuses, events on the campus, opportunities, etc.

Cons

The biggest con is the annual layoff. During most of the years I was there, we were growing like crazy, beating expectations, gaining in stock price, etc. It was always positive and upward. However, every single January, it was known that there would be a round of layoffs, even when all numbers were looking great as they almost always were. Management called it restructuring. But, over the years, some really good people were let go for no apparent reason. Then to add insult to injury, a week or two later, there would be a company quarterly meeting discussing how VMware was doing so well and is still hiring, but they had to make some changes. It always felt dishonest and the sympathy for those let go came across as disingenuous.
