Pros

This list is going to be odd, but truthful: -Salary: You make really good money. -Coworkers: The people you work with are extremely competent, hardworking professionals. I have an incredibly high opinion of the people who I worked with, and it pained me too see talented people burn out and quit during my time there. -Good project management experience and opportunities to interact with and solve problems for a variety of IT and healthcare professionals. Also you will hone your time managment skills. -Learn public speaking. You will be addressing more than 100 professionals sometimes, and you get really good at presenting effectively. -Campus/ offices -Break rooms w/ fridges always stocked with tons of drinks -On Campus food -Underground Parking -Freedom to control your schedule: There isnt really any clocking in or out. You self report your hours.

Cons

-Hours: Long. Everyone says there is poor-work life balance. It is true. Believe it. If you are a sedentary type who likes sitting down all day, then going home after 10-12 hours and sitting down some more, this job is a good fit. If your active/ fit and like to work and 8-9 hour day, this job will wear at you. Generally I'd get home in winter, go for a run or to the gym, eat dinner, then sleep. Thats how the week is. -Amount of work: You will keep getting more and more responsibilities. My boss told me he knows people have too much work when they break down and cry in front of him. Telling your Team Lead (AKA direct superior) that you really have too much work will usually result in 2 conversations: a) you need better time management skills/ to sacrifice more of your personal time for the company. b) "Epic might not be the right fit" conversation where you are passively aggressively told you may want to quit. -Travel: When you are supporting two customers and you are travelling all the time, here is what happens: You fly to customer A and work on that project all day. Then you go back to the hotel after work and do all the work you needed to get done for customer B. In the office you will deal with both customers at once, and your internal responsibilities. -Internal responsibilities: Most people have quite a few internal things they work on, like developing training materials, Writing and triaging QA notes, Developing new content, webinars, meetings, etc. They are a time suck and many things are , arguably, unnecessary. -Go lives: When a customer turns on the software and starts to use it, Epic staff volunteer to fly out and help. You fly to a hospital and act as Tech support for 2 or 3 Twelve hour days. You receive no incentive for doing this. You are salaried, so the hours do not affect your pay. You will be told that you should do it because you're a team player. However, they bill customers for your hours. So, you are making Epic thousands of dollars and receiving no benefit. You will be passive aggressively threatened if you don't do enough go-lives. Many occur on weekends. If you do a weekend shift, epic gives you one (not two) days of vacation as compensation.

Pros

Industry leader that is booming in the down economy (thanks to ObamaCare) Hire lots of recent college grads Good base pay for first job out of college Only hire very intelligent people Everyone receives either a personal or 2 person shared office No dress code (this is a con for a lot of people) Great first job to make some decent money while you apply for a better job.

Cons

Project Managers are over worked: Epic does not know how to turn down a customer so there is a lot of work to be done. Recent hires are being given customers before they are trained or certified. Most PM's are not qualified or ready to be working onsite. If you get hired here as a PM get ready for Epic to chop you head off and throw you in blind. They claim that PM's only work 50-55hr max a week, this couldn't be further from the truth. Many PM's are working well above 60hr weeks. Management at Epic is very inexperienced and unprofessional. The only way you will survive as a PM and not add to the ridiculously high turn over rate is if you get a good Manager above you. If your manager doesn't like you (your manager will most likely be only a couple years older then you) your job will be much worse then the job already is! Verona WI (even Madison) suck: This is not your typically big city job, be prepared for boredom.....that is if you have time to be bored :( You are helping implement a product that for most physicians is being forced down their throats. This makes your work environment that much harder as almost everyone at Epic is met with hostility from their customers. Be prepared to drink the Epic kool aid like all companies. If you come into Epic with any knowledge of the healthcare industry and what physicians really think of Epic (also knowledge of how well Epic works in existing hospitals) it will make it a lot harder to believe the false truths they feed you about the software. List goes on....

Pros

Good campus Good Benefits Health care field, if you are interested. Smart people. Health insurance is good. 401k is ok. Individual offices. Subsidised food in cafeteria, though most people I know used to have their lunch in their offices as they did not have time to sit in the cafeteria.

Cons

The technology used is very old and outdated. Almost 90% of the company still works on VB and Cache. So the experience you gain here is of no use outside this company. Unless you want to stay in this company forever, this is not the right place of a Software Developer. The corporate structure is very flat and there is no room for growth. There is absolutely no transparency about what the management thinks about you. No proper feedback from TLs. I dont know what promotions are based on. I know people who have been there for 10 years and still coding and working long hours and they were never promoted. I guess they are just stuck there. I once had a discussion with one of the employees there who was a C++ developer and now he is just stuck there for years as he has forgotten C++ and now knows only VB. You cannot work for 1 year with Epic clients as per Non-compete agreement and they are only people who use VB and cache. So it will be very difficult to get a job with the skills you get from Epic. Epic related jobs, outside Epic, are mostly implementation related and reporting. Unless you are in a team that deals with these two you wont be of any value to these customers of Epic. As a SD you wont be getting much experience in these anyways. Employees are required to work like machines. There wont be any interactions among team members other than work related. Everyone just comes, works and leaves. If you are someone who need H1B sponsorship, then this place would be good for sometime. They file green card but it will be in EB3 category and you will have to wait for years in line.
