Pros

-This company will give you responsibilities that are typically reserved for folks of higher tenure and/or experience in the industry. This is a double-edged sword. If you survive, you will be personally and professionally rewarded. -There are no limitations to who or what you can pursue as far as projects go internally, if you develop the competency and relevant knowledge base. This will naturally depend, and may expand on, your intra-company network of individuals who can sponsor projects and enable you to do things other companies would not. -Epic is (literally) world-class as far as healthcare IT goes; you are expected to be a world-class performer. Exceed expectations there, and you may find other challenges to be trivial in comparison.

Cons

-This company will give you responsibilities that are typically reserved for folks of higher tenure and/or experience in the industry. This is a double-edged sword. If you do not survive, you will be forced to improve quickly, or see the exit in quick order. -There are no limitations to who or what you can pursue as far as projects go internally, if you develop the competency and relevant knowledge base. If you do not develop or pursue these projects yourself or through your application team, you may be asked to take on a role internally that you do not enjoy. Depending on volume of work required to be successful in that role, it will take a toll on you long term. -Epic is (literally) world-class as far as healthcare IT goes; you are expected to be a world-class performer. If you fall short of that expectation before you get a chance to learn project management principles holistically and you may find yourself to be in awkward spot after you leave the company.

Pros

You'll meet some amazing coworkers who will go on to do big things - - start companies, get an MBA and become VPs elsewhere, go to med/dental/professional school etc. The food is good, but it'd be nice to be paid in money and purchase our own healthy food. Epic as a company truly delivers amazing service to its customers, and that's something to feel good about. It's a great place to start for a few years or as a "gap year" before additional school or career opportunities.

Cons

The job is all-encompassing and people who are good at their job were, in my experience at Epic, quite boring as people. Pay is low for the value you provide - most coworkers do not know their worth as they are just out of school. It is also a hard job to do long term when you are exposed to end users, many of whom wish desperately for a better more modern solution - - especially clinicians who are forced to work in the EMR everyday.
