Pros

A great opportunity to provide scientific support to European policy making and mix with other European colleagues. Good salary with benefits. Ispra site is set in a lovely environment near the Lake Maggiore.

Cons

As with any big organisation it is bureaucratic and slow. Unless you hold a permanent position (increasingly difficult to secure) long-term employment is not an an option for contractual agent positions have a maximum of 6 years. So can be a career cul-de-sac. There are external positions but these have less benefits.

Pros

Working for the European Commission means workng with 30 different nationalities, hearing different languages in the corridors, being aware of multiculturalism. There are endless job oportunities in different areas and the salary compensation is very good.

Cons

Securing a job in the Commission is not an easy task: you either chose ot work as a contractual agent which means the post is secured for a maximum of 6 years after which there is NO WAY you can stay further; or then you chose to compete against 30.000 Europeans from all over Europe for +-130 posts. The process takes +- a year and there are so many different stages in it that you sometimes forget that you have even enrolled in this battle.
