Pros

I enjoy the European perspective on all issues, the fact of working every day for the European project, the extremely professional colleagues and the possibility to change area of policy very easily. Career not exclusively dictated by recommendations like in my home country Italy. Great salary and benefits.

Cons

Brussels can be depressing and difficult to live in, however real estate is cheap. The career opportunities are limited as in all big public administrations. Some managers are not good "people's" managers, though they are good on substance. More should be done to increase personnel motivation through manager training.

Cons

Very bureaucratic (but not only bad reasons for that) Flat hierarchy structure - difficult to rise in hierarchy Brussels still a soulless provincial town with delusions of grandeur

Pros

Working for the EU commission is an inspiring process that involves continuous learning, skill building and much experience. The working environment is multi-cultural and public, political and scientific standpoints are confronted on a daily basis.

Cons

Procurements are time-exhausitng, so working with externals may require some tedious negotiations and reporting. Extensive reports are also boring. Finally, the research centres are often located in unattractive regions, so you gotta drive everywhere to get anything.
