Pros

There is significant opportunity to change jobs within the firm due to the diversified businesses within the company (employer services, fund accounting, capital markets, operations, technology). The benefits programs are strong. Employees can receive tuition reimbursement, gym membership reimbursement, computer assistance and even back-up day care. Some sites offer on-site health clubs and/or walking trails.

Cons

Employees are just cogs in the wheel at Fidelity. Two examples reinforcing this opinion are: entire business units are relocated on a whim and development programs are non-existent. Raises and bonuses are “capped” minimizing the importance of excellent performance. In the end, the really great performers leave seeking appropriate compensation. Many end up returning shortly after for a matching (or higher) salary indicative of their true worth (dictated by the market for their services).

Pros

Great compensation structure, even for unlicensed Representatives starting out in the industry. Company spends considerable amount of time and resources on professional development of employees. There is a really strong sense of healthy competition amongst the associates. The company does everything it can to recognize and compensate those who perform above their benchmarks. As a matter of fact, I've seen approximately 10 associates get promoted in the less than 5 years I have spent here. There is a lot of room to grow as well, even for those who have plenty of industry experience. The support structure is amazing, the company really goes out of its way to make sure every associate is successful.

Cons

Different demographic of the community is a big determinant of your compensation.

Pros

High salary. Many offices subscribe to a 9-5 day and don't expect much overtime so it can be a family-friendly atmosphere. A lot of smart, talented people. Generally thorough review process means you'll get regular feedback (even though it might not turn into any recognition for a job well done).

Cons

Very little opportunity for career advancement in a lot of groups, and unclear criteria for promotion. Top-heavy management bloat and low turnover prevents upward movement. There's a good chance your role & responsibilities will get narrower over time, rather than broader and more challenging/exciting. Expect many of your colleagues to be frustrated that they're not being used to their potential.
