A Great Balance

Pros

As a software engineer you are given an opportunity to work across many different technologies. You don't have to be pigeonholed into a specific area and are encouraged to try working in new technologies. The tasks are sizeable since there is still a good amount of foundational work in my area. Although there are maintenance tasks to handle, they don't seem to be needed as much as I have experienced at other companies. Collaboration is highly encouraged, and younger and older engineers seem to blend seamlessly. They have a rotational program for new college grads which is outstanding. Gartner has the best vacation policy that I have been given. The work is challenging, and management is very understanding when mistakes occur. Management is also supportive and will listen to your concerns.

Cons

Sometimes the Agile process is not fully trusted and/or completely utilized. Concepts like Kanban boards should probably be considered. Technical enhancements and Product enhancements need to be considered in unison instead of separate threads. Greater trust in engineers to perform tasks like deployments without so much red tape.

Pros

-You're probably not going to be doing anything really important but no one's going to get too mad at you if you don't do well either -Overall laid back environment, mostly good work life balance -As long as you don't care about promotions or raises it is pretty easy to just sit back and relax and coast your way to retirement.

Cons

-The recruiters can be hardcore penny pinchers and bullies, aggressively trying anything they can to make you accept a lower offer or position. My recruiter immediately started undermining my experience, then harassed me with calls nonstop to haggle about salary, and even tried to send me an offer letter with less than what we verbally agreed on in the previous call just minutes ago...the whole experience left a really bad taste in my mouth that stayed with me until the end -Every department, including the tech department, is run in a very corporate fashion with a lot of non-tech people in upper management. There's not really any collaboration between upper management and tech when creating goals. The goals generally flow in one direction, from top to bottom. This results in a lot of disconnect and frustration. -Heavy office politics and typical "boys club" culture. Also, casual racism, sexism, and ageism is tolerated because...well, no one really cares. Unconscious bias and inclusivity training is never mentioned past onboarding.
