Pros

Short commute. Top notch benefit plan. The pay was good until a few years ago, has not kept pace with the cost of living.

Cons

Managers brought in by former CIO have alienated their staff. They appear arrogant, dismissing employees opinions out of hand. Their decision making appears to have little connection with reality. Example 1: placing an extreme emphasis on high-visibility security projects while ignoring other equally severe yet harder to fix security flaws. They obsess over "performance indicators" at the expense of the day-to-day operation (as in: the money making part) of the business. Pushing out thousands of patches looks great on a spreadsheet and will net you a large bonus. Implementing new protocols for every laptop user, while no less important, is much more difficult and time consuming. Example 2: outsourcing helpdesk to "offshore" location. Users phone for tech support and struggle to communicate their issue to someone that can neither understand nor speak English at an acceptable level. Offshoring support may work for consumer products like cell phones and vacuum cleaners - it does not work for end users in a steel company. While this may be saving the company money it is also a prime example of "you get what you pay for".

Pros

Fair pay and good benefits.

Cons

Management non supportive. Leaders self interested and not willing to help. Extremely stressful environment. They will not honour what may have been expressed at hiring. Caution should be exercised when considering this company.

Pros

Its a major player in the mini-mill steel industry. If you have the opportunity to work for a seasoned manager, you'll definitely gain more in mentorship than you'll imagine.

Cons

The company is going through a tough time and management is struggling. The firm went from a being a company where employees observed that senior management's actions spoke to their words, they believed in the firm and the team they nurtured. As the company has grown, the sense of family has slowly disappeared. The management style went from an engaged, all hands on deck mentality to one of "what's in it for me?" style of leadership. In recent years, prior to the recent downturn the corporate office grew exponentially and in turn "fiefdoms" were created as new departments grew like wildfire. Granted, the company as a whole doubled in size since 2004 but the growth at the corporate office was unsustainable and bewildering. In an effort to define processes and implement "controls", the firm as a whole has become weighted down with a level of bueracracy that limits innovative thinking and reactions. The working environment had become so political in nature that it was no longer a joy to come to work.
