Specific to working outside of US: work life balance is poor, as most partner teams are based on West Coast, so you're either spending most of evenings working or you're excluded from key decision making (which impacts your performance ratings and growth opportunities)

Upward mobility is a challenge; people on the Eng Manager ladder are overqualified and all competing for a small set of growth opportunities; you're not promoted until you've demonstrated sustained, next-level competence but you can't demonstrate next-level competence because they put you in a box based on your current level, preventing you from accessing such opportunities; your manager has to create a next-level opportunity for you to do so; so you're somewhat beholden to your manager to progress; very hierarchical with respect to Engineering levels; they mean more than you might imagine (especially if you've not worked for Big Tech companies before; down-leveling for experienced hires is the norm
