Pros

Health & Dental Benefits + Equity.

Cons

5.8% of the company made up of African & African Americans. The promise of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives often falls short, as funding meant to support HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and programs for Black professionals in tech can sometimes serve as a superficial effort, rather than creating real change within companies. Many Black employees struggle to advance into leadership positions, facing a lack of genuine support and mentorship. In contrast, White and Asian employees often receive more direct support, as these groups are more prominently represented in leadership roles. Google’s "Stay & Thrive" program, for instance, aims to assist employees who identify as Black, Hispanic, or Native American when they encounter challenges with their managers. This program helps them find new roles within the company without their current manager’s knowledge. However, while a few Black employees may receive support through such initiatives, it’s a small percentage—around 1%. Given this reality, it's crucial for Black professionals to cultivate their own businesses and alternative income streams outside of major tech companies like Google. While these companies are often celebrated, the reality can be different for underrepresented groups, and the intellectual capabilities of Black professionals are sometimes met with discomfort or resistance within these spaces.

Pros

Obviously the salary and benefits are incredible. Flexibility in being able to move to new offices or visit offices around the world – incredible. Plugging into a huge, influential machine and working with people from around the world? Amazing.

Cons

Don't expect to do anything significant while working at Google. People are constantly nitpicking each other over irrelevant nonsense during code reviews; very antagonistic culture in a lot of teams (not all). Antagonistic promotion structure as well – "we have 2 slots for promotion, so even though 3 people earned it, we have to choose 2." Expect to be getting constantly re-orged, expect your projects to get cancelled when a new C-Suite guy slides in from Microsoft, shakes everything up for no reason, and then slides laterally out into Oracle next year. Get excited for managers who don't want to manage people, they wanted to get promoted, and were told they could only do that by taking on direct reports. Get REALLY excited for that. Get stoked for a diminishing culture and ever-decreasing transparency. Bye Google. Hope you figure out your sh!t.

Pros

Beautiful office, great food and snacks, equity, healthcare, gym, pool, often flexible, good products

Cons

Our supervisor consistently engages in bullying behavior toward me and my colleagues on a daily basis. These instances primarily occur in private settings, away from the observation of others. The effects of this behavior have been detrimental to several team members, with some opting to take extended leaves due to the resulting exhaustion and negative impact on their mental well-being and job performance. The supervisor's actions convey a disregard for the feelings of others, often dismissing legitimate concerns and even insinuating that individuals are irrational or unstable. Additionally, he exhibits favoritism, unfairly criticizing certain individuals for minor issues while deliberately overlooking similar behavior in others. His conduct extends to performance evaluations, where he unjustly assigns poor ratings and misrepresents the feedback of team members. The supervisor targets individuals he holds personal grudges against, burdening them with unmanageable workloads and creating situations designed for failure, only to shift blame onto the affected individuals. His relationship with the Director appears to be built on favoritism and ingratiating behavior rather than merit. Proving these actions is challenging due to their clandestine nature and the supervisor's adeptness at manipulating information. Numerous employees have either resigned or attempted to leave the team due to his behavior. Potential new recruits should exercise caution, as they may either become favored by the supervisor or endure daily suffering in silence. For HR personnel, intervention is imperative to prevent further attrition. To those experiencing similar mistreatment, I encourage you to bravely report such behavior to HR. Google removes bad reviews like this one to protect themselves on the outside but in the inside its unfortunately like this. Its hard to get promoted or move in the org as you would have to be close friends with the managers or the right people.
