Pros

Good salaries, outstanding manager culture, and nice perks.

Cons

Google just decided to lay off 12,000 employees worldwide. With just the profits from last quarter, they could've paid these employees for 10 years. In a heartless, gutless move, google laid off without warning and seemingly at random people who had been at the company for possibly decades by sending them an email. They didn't even let those employees communicate with their former teammates to say goodbye. Simultaneously, they left thousands of non-US employees around the world uncertain about their futures, in many cases facing the possibility of deportation due to their visas being tied to their employment. They destroyed employee morale and trust in them. And to top it off, they attempted to gaslight us in an embarrassing town hall with leadership, giving non-answers to legitimate questions and pretending that the layoffs were a necessity. This is demonstrably a lie. Do not make important life choices based on this company. Do not move internationally and assume that if you do a good job in a core team that you will maintain your job. People with excellent performance reviews, in core positions with decades at the company were let go without even a conversation.

Pros

- Great salary - Nice accommodations in office like cafes, snacks, gyms, and nice architechture - Free stuff and modern desktops/laptops with a support team - Lots of internal discussion boards about nerd stuff

Cons

- Endless treadmill of stress and wishful thinking - My feedback to parts of Google outside of my team, such as YouTube, was systematically ignored - Google has thousands of ways to coerce its users, especially the tech-illiterate, to fork over rights to their personal information without understanding the consequences (personalized ads, location history, notification preferences...) . I realized this before accepting the offer but I wanted the money. - If you're an engineer you have to learn dozens of proprietary technologies which aren't magically better than anything open source just because Googlers made them, and then you get to throw away all of that knowledge when you leave - Google might just cancel your project at any time
