Pros

Global exposure, well positioned to take advantage of emerging markets (China & India). Lots of opportunity for improvements in efficiency, due to horrific technology.

Cons

Technology is about two decades behind. Uncertain of committment to USA business. Working for the Brits is very different than working for US bank. Most career jobs given to Brits in Management Training program - very hard for Americans to "get in."

Pros

Work balance life and respect. Flexitime rules. Possibility of growth in learning. Name of the company well known as one of the leading banks in the world. Management showing interest in making HSBC as a "Best place to work". As a consequence there are efforts in order to explain what the management is doing, what are the aims for the future and what is the current situation. It is also appreciated the interest of periodically asking opinions and making surveys on how they can improve the daily work life. Besides social events and multicultural environment are welcome. The diversity is a value.

Cons

Too prudential way of making the business. There is a general conservative attitude often. It helps on negative periods but on the other hand it does not pay once the situation is up again. The management approach is friendly and open but it is uncertain and not clear whether they are really so. Making career locally is not always easily achievable as it is claimed, as it is not only depending on personal hystory and value. It seems there is a standardization downward or upward to avoid discontent. In my view there is no distiction between "talents" and normal workers (at least locally).

Pros

This is a company that really treats you well in those things that are not salary related and that do not really affect your performance. If you are looking for a place to lay low and have time to do other things outside work, this place is great. There are a lot of things you can dedicate yourself in the social side and the company promotes and supports time off for helping the community. Also if you get bored with your position you are encouraged to move around which is very good, you might even be considered for international moves. Benefits are fantastic.

Cons

Do not think you will ever be valued or treated better than your job level. Your manager will try to do your job more often than expected and then blame you for not doing it right. There is a lot of inconsistency on how things are done and nobody really cares. Processes are different even for the same stuff which creates a lot of confusion. Not a lot of people gets authorized to work from home and if you do, don't expect to have good support. The IT department is not behind the times, it's behind the computer age, which leads to a lot of anachronistic features, like you are not allowed to listen to music at your workstation.
