Pros

Lot of opportunities inside the organization to grow and look for opportunities that might be of your interest. Diverse work culture and a lot of focus on patenting ideas.

Cons

You are a drop in an ocean. To get visibility from senior or middle management, you have to market yourselves. More than the work you do, you may be appreciated for the initiatives you take and how good you can communicate and convince others.

Pros

Intelligent, competent, and friendly coworkers. Freedom to be creative to solve challenges. Cooperative and relaxed work environment. Ability to employee advanced technologies and tools. Flexible work hours.

Cons

Sometimes paces are a bit slow. Too many meetings. Cubicle wall too low and insufficient noise insulation. Office privacy not as good as some of my previous employees.

Pros

IBM is a giant company with many opportunities for leadership. In my experience, first line management is very understanding when dealing with life events both expected and unexpected. As a beginning engineer, you generally share your closed office with one other colleague as opposed to an open layout (i.e. cubicles).

Cons

IBM Poughkeepsie is a very old site when compared to many competitors and even other IBM sites, and since there is no other large high tech company in the area, there are very few perks. Since the products we are working on have a very long history, there is a lot of legacy code and design that can be irritating to an engineer.
