Pros

IBM is the top of the field. You know going in that you are going to play for the A team, and it is a great resume builder.

Cons

You're just a number. It is easy to get lost in the shuffle, as the recent layoffs tell.

Pros

Stability, biggest IT firm in the world, looks good on CV

Cons

Bad communication, managers with absolutely no people skills, sales/profit orientation with no regard to what the client really needs, too many lines of report internally and no support from management, level of competence leaves much to be desired, IBM is living on the laurels of years gone by, too much " cover your ass" policies hindering productivity and overwhelms managers

Pros

Education, Opportunity, Personal Growth, Stability are all some of the best attributes of IBM. There certainly is a lot of opportunities for career, education and personal growth within IBM, the number of programs out there for employees is huge, sometimes that is also the problem. With IBM there are times where you feel like a number. Currently IBM has approx. 400K employees and sometimes you feel like a very small piece of that number other times when all is going well and your management team supports and publicly recognizes you and or your work it seems much smaller. Overall the combination of salary, benefits, flexibility, employee development programs and stability are all reasons to work for IBM if you can get beyond being a number.

Cons

Breaking into management is difficult, even if you have talent and competency to become a manager sometimes you get overlooked because the hiring managers already have someone in mind and are only going through the motions of a job posting/interviews before officially giving the job to their person. Like in the other post, there are times where being one of 400K can seem overwhelming and you feel small and overlooked by being so large. The key is to getting an excellent manager to support you and to be passionate about employee development otherwise you will get lost in the shuffle.
