Pros

Very flexible with work at home options. Opportunities to work with the best in the industry. Excellent on line/virtual classroom professional courses available for all employees. I've had excellent growth experiences working on smaller start up projects which have provided invaluable experience.

Cons

Too much red tape hinders decision making. Too many middle managers who do not understand software development or developers. It is very difficult for non-technical employees to get good raises or promotions. There is no identifiable corporate culture in the software group and people are given assignments rather than put into growth or career positions for the larger projects. Senior management determines schedules and scope and does not understand appropriate project management methodology which leads to lots of weekend work to accommodate already compressed schedules.

Pros

I joined IBM though the Graduate programme. This has a strong focus on skills development. Each graduate completes more than 6 weeks of training over the two years and is assigned to a number of different projects to provide a variety of experience. The career prospects are good at IBM, you have the opportunity to move into a variety of professions, providing there is a business need. You have continued support from management to meet your goals. They have a big focus on work life balance. Most importantly, working for IBM looks good on your CV should you ever want to leave.

Cons

IBM is a large business, like most corporations it is very much process driven. To complete the simpliest of tasks, something that could be achieved in ten minutes at a smaller company can take up to two weeks to complete. This is not only frustrating but can also be embarassing to client and supplier teams who are much more agile. Also, there is a lot of game playing at IBM, if you want to go far, you have to be prepared to play the game. You won't be rewarded for doing your job well, you have to be preared to network with and influence management.

Pros

Flexible work schedule and the ability to work at home. Communication and technology surpasses most other companies.

Cons

Sr Mgmt cares little about workers. They are seen as dispensible. IBM states they are fair in evaluations but then they put limits on the ratings employees can receive. IBM is claiming they are leading the way in salaries but their marketing tool is that they are now bringing salaries up to the midpoint of industry standards. In the end, it is shareholders that IBM cares about - not the workers. Its a tough environment to excel compared to your peers while still balancing work life issues.
