Pros

IBM may be a good place for someone to gain some initial experience, but don't plan on staying very long. Because no matter how good a job you do - someone, somewhere can do it for a lower cost. Not necessarily better, but cheaper - and quarterly results are all that matter.

Cons

There's no loyalty; no job security. There is so much emphasis on cost-cutting practices that management has been effectively "throwing the baby out with the bath water" for several years now. It's frustrating to try to do a good job in a declining business environment surrounded by low morale.

Not the IBM of the past

Pros

Experience working for a large international company. In certain job categories, one can get valuable on the job training in IBM products and technologies

Cons

Bloated management bureaucracy with constant emphasis on employee expense cutting, year after year. Managers of technical departments are often technically incompetent themselves and don't know how to manage employees properly. Yearly raises are practically non-existent, even for solid performers. Resource Actions (IBM term for letting go of employees) occur yearly, often replacing older, higher paid employees with cheaper, overseas employees which are not as qualified to do the work.

Pros

Was able to move schedule around and work off hours to make up time if any emergencies came up. The start of my career at IBM the place was great, with plenty of opps for growth..but I guess with all companies that went away.

Cons

All technical and PM work is shipped outside the USA. Mgt no longer care about the people, if you don't want to do the work and put in as many hours as they dictate, they rather you leave and get some one else at less pay. Usually it is someone outside the US. No longer grant any educational opps, if you want to learn something you have to do it on your own time and your dollar even if its related to your job.
