Pros

It's a paycheck. Some first line managers are good and will save your hide. Compensation is decent.

Cons

The company is focused completely on the bottom line. Experience isn't valued. Layoffs have no rhyme or reason, and often seem to be veiled attempts to offshore job functions, and are alarmingly frequent, even if a good year has happened. The bottom line has priority over product quality and customer satisfaction unless you're a premium customer or employee satisfaction. If you have a decent first and second-line management, life can be tolerable. Benefits and compensation are often spun as "in line with industry averages", implying that we're only average.

Pros

IBM has excellent executive management and they know very well how to run business. I would say IBM is a good investment but not a good employer. You can learn well about business if you are in management chain at some senior level.

Cons

IBM is not very well paying employer. IBM has excellent executive mgmt but they are quite conservative in passing profits down the line. IBM is always striving to increase margins and they try that from both the ends. Increase product/service rates and pay less to employees. IMO, this is short term view instead of developing satisfied work force with high moral.

Nepotism Trumps Competence

Pros

company with solid financials, established footprint in emerging markets, breadth of portfolio, well established and respected brand, as saying goes 'no one is fired for hiring IBM'

Cons

large and disconnected organization, insular groups with no incentive to work with other groups or divisions, new hires left to their own devices to acclimate to firm and figure out how to be successful, career path unclear, nepotism rampant and trumps competence in career advancement, 20yr veterans has top slots so newcomers have a while to wait to reach senior level, matrix management of at least two managers for each employee is a waste of money and cons outweigh the pros
