Good place to get experience, but very poor performance review system.

Great people. Lots of opportunities inside IBM. Good compensation.

Cons

Performance review is done in a meaningless way. Everybody except one or two has the same performance review. Some managers are incompetent compared to others. Generally, performance reviews must be done strictly to managers as well as employees. Whatever standard will be like publication, patent, and product impact, it needs to be completely reviewed. Senior management is only running the company to maximize their own personal compensation. Work coordination between teams is not done well. Decision is made very slowly. Good work often is not recognized if you are under incompetent manager. If you want to work at IBM, try to find competent manager.

Great professional peoples but not so great work

Pros

Top notch work life balance in my line of work (IT development). I'm work at home employee since I joined IBM. People around me and in other department that I deal with are very professional. I rarely see inter office politics. I never saw intimidation, negativity towards other people etc. 1st and 2nd line managers are always straight forward with us. The company is genuinely interested in diversity. I have very decent market rate pay package. Lots of learning opportunity if you are interested. Since IBM owns numerous software development tools, they are at your disposal, free to use to further your knowledge and career.

Cons

In US locations, I see new project opportunity to on is drying up. There is lot of administrative work involved in my job as software developer and technical lead. There is more operational work then new development opportunity due to cut backs and off shoring.

If you have NO life and are willing to work 70 to 90 hours a week, you will be paid well.

Cons

In order to get ahead and not be laid off, you will need to sacrifice your personal life in order to put the hours in that the job will demand. For example, I had 4:30 am conference calls with a contracting group in Romania with deliverables due on Saturdays. Further, there are too many "Queen Bees" involved in Systems and Technology who get accolades for 1000 page design documents written such that contractors cannot comprehend them.
