Pros

Because IBM is a such big companies, there are many other career opportunities within the company once you have a foot in the door. You can spend your entire career at IBM holding tens of positions. IBM also has pretty good benefits such as 15 days vacation days, 6 floating holdings in additional to federal holidays. Insurance plans are also better than many other big companies. If you are a slacker and want to be lost in a big ocean, IBM is also a place for you. I knew somebody who were on the bench for 6 months doing nothing and still had their job.

Cons

It's hard to be recognized for your achievements because it's so big and your manager has many too many direct reports. Many of your peers are incompetent professionals. If you are lucky, you will be staffed a project surrounded by great people whom you can learn from. However, most of time, especially in Public Sector, you will be staffed as a body on project that was set up to failed surrounded by slackers. Work life balance was very for me while working at IBM. For Christmas in a row, I had to work for releases schedule to go live in the week of January. I was in GBS SCM Public Sector.

Pros

IBM has good brand awareness so as a salesperson it is easy to get customer meetings. The company has a broad portfolio of offerings so again as a salesperson you can meet with a lot of different types of customers and offer a multitude of solutions. IBM has a good benefits package, but HP has an even better one because they pay for a car for you to use. IBM offers good salaries but you cannot make commissions anymore due to 6 month quotas.

Cons

The company has too many offerings and too many people. Too many people in management just sit in their homes and bother the in field sales reps. Because the company is so large the pricing for products and services is usually much larger than more nimble competitors. The morale at IBM is really bad right now. The sales culture at IBM has gotten horrible.

Pros

To get experience - not training (no training given) to go to your next job. Hope that it looks good on the resume. Still do not see why other employers think that working for IBM is a good thing.

Cons

Too much work time, no training, bad management, constant threats of 'resource action' (layoff). Always dumping more work on you from your laid off coworkers (with no training, no time to learn, no support). Constant threat your job will be offshored. The latest morale boost is that your job will be moved to one of three cities in the USA and no moving expenses paid and your salary will be adjusted to the local prevailing rate. Could be worse, job could be going to India, Brazil, etc without you.
