Pros

IBM has nearly a century old legacy of being in the forefornt of Human Resource Policies, it was one of the few major corporations to have a manager of color, to having given benefits to same sex couples to prohibit discrimination. It is one of the few companies which cannot officially donate corporate contibutions ( via PAC) to politicians. IBM has always tried to hire the brightest of the people from various schools or other companies, this in turn has helped the company maintain a very high caliber work force. IBM does have some good benefits, one of the very few companies even today offering free medical to employees.

Cons

Like some of the legacy companies IBM seems to have too many managers, the hierarchy level is simply too large for it to function in todays day and age esp when it comes to customers requiring immediate feedback. The company needs to have far fewer levels possibly by trimming a lot of fat from the top.

Pros

Good people to work with and the work can be interesting.

Cons

There is never enough time or people to do the work we're given. There is very high pressure to get any problem resolved immediately. Nights and weekend work is common, without compensation. There is little recognition for doing a job well the first time. But if you make a mistake and then correct it, then people notice that you fixed something, even though you were to the one to break it to begin with. As in many places, those that talk the loudest are those that advance, even if what they are so loudly talking about is nonsense.

Pros

There are numerous internal positions available which allow you to switch jobs or directions within the company. This is very interesting long term or if Personal circumstances change. IBM has good tolerance for Experienced Professionals who want or need to step off the social ladder. As a person who worked independently in the same job too, you need to get used to it. If you are young, you can climb the social ladder. If you are an experienced Professional, you are able to function and continue to function in such a role if you can sustain the continuous expected professional growth.

Cons

The size of the company. due to its size, a lot of regulations and restrictions are in place, which sometimes prevents some personalized treatment. During recruitement, I was "downsized" from a "Senior Managing Consultant" to "Managing Consultant" but was not told that the promotion to a higher rank was regulated and required extra certification. after 3 years, I am still not back at the "Senior Managing Consultant" position I had postulated for originally, due to the enourmous red tape. especially if your salary is/was on the top of the Market in your band,it is hard to get a financial promotion or a higher rank.
