Pros

Top notch work life balance in my line of work (IT development). I'm work at home employee since I joined IBM. People around me and in other department that I deal with are very professional. I rarely see inter office politics. I never saw intimidation, negativity towards other people etc. 1st and 2nd line managers are always straight forward with us. The company is genuinely interested in diversity. I have very decent market rate pay package. Lots of learning opportunity if you are interested. Since IBM owns numerous software development tools, they are at your disposal, free to use to further your knowledge and career.

Cons

In US locations, I see new project opportunity to on is drying up. There is lot of administrative work involved in my job as software developer and technical lead. There is more operational work then new development opportunity due to cut backs and off shoring.

Pros

In IBM, you do have access to a large intellectual capital knowledge base and the people you work with are very smart. If you manage to move from account to account, it allows you to see how many different companies work without the stress of having to find work on your own. The higher you go up in the organization, though, you are expected to be a mercenary and find the work on your own. You don't get the big bucks for nothing.

Cons

There is a constant pressure for cost savings. In the US, labor makes up the biggest cost component and IBM has had a policy of micro-layoffs to stay under the public radar. This occurs at the expense of employee morale and in some cases, customer satisfaction. With the increased reliance on off-shoring to lower cost regions, US layoffs are going to accelerate. On top of this, training is almost non-existent. It's hard to justify 40 hours of training when you have a utilization target.

Pros

The total compensation package is good and there are plenty of good people to work for and with. There's a wide variety of work to do within IBM, so there are sometimes good opportunities to change jobs internally.

Cons

Not the stable job it once was. Regular layoffs are a matter of course now, and indications are that those jobs will move overseas and not return to the US. Since IBM seems more interested in buying new technology instead of creating it, you're better off being in a company bought by IBM if you want new technology experience. IBM cares much more about the stock and how the world perceives it than how employees feel about the company, and that leads to poor products and support.
