      IBM, A good learning ground, but not a place to stay for an entire career

      Pros

      Excellent place to start your career and understand how to work in a large organization. Alot of opportunity to try different areas on the business

      Cons

      It's a very political organization, every year it seems the company takes a little bit away from employees. The compensation is below the industry average. IBM has a way of institutionalizing you to the IBM way, this can be dishearting for those the question the norm, eventually you have to make a decision on whether you can live without anything changing and becoming an IBMer or quit drinking the koolaid and find a new opportunity outside the company.

      Pros

      Big company - so you have lots of colleagues. A good part of them is very motivated.

      Cons

      Very strict management, sometimes you have no chance to develop a project because it does not fit someones senior managements vision. Though several mergers there are employee-blocks/LOBs/internal comanies working against each other which is disgusting.

      Pros

      IBM has a good reputation; there is a variety of jobs available within IBM (this was the case in 2007 ...); IBM offers excellent opportunities to get the foot in the business world (I started as a student)

      Cons

      You are only a number and not being valued as an employee. It is all about "headcounts". Promotions will be granted on higher levels, on middle levels (e.g. IT Specialist) promotions are rare. As mentioned before, IBM is good to start but not good to climb higher on the career ladder.
