      Pros

      Benefits, job stability, good for your resume. There are thousands of fantastic people (colleagues) at the company; the problem comes with some who tend to abuse authority because they know that there are few checks and balances at the company when employees complain or dispute working conditions and/or evaluations.

      Cons

      Very limited opportunity for career growth; too much favoritism in promotions and assignments. Low pay compared to others in the industry doing similar work. Increase opportunity for career growth; remove favoritism in promotions and assignments -- base it on skills. Pay comparably to competitors for consultants in the industry doing similar work.

      Lack of Opportunity at IBM, Unless You're In Asia

      Pros

      As a large company, there are many divisions, fields, and locations from which to choose. This advantage gets lost, though, when opportunities come up in different locations--the company, which used to stand for "I've Been Moved," will not pay for your move--you pay out of your own pocket (except if you are an executive, of course).

      Cons

      Outsourcing, layoffs, increasing workload for remaining employees, working weekends with no recognition or extra pay, no pay increases 2 of 4 years. If you want a promotion--good luck. If you want a job in a different location, you pay for the move yourself. No travel, no Christmas parties, no retirement package, no stock options--just more and more work for the same amount of pay.

      Pros

      The flexible work hours and work-from-home options are great. The breadth of knowledge and resources is almost unlimited. The social networking tools are par to none.

      Cons

      It is very difficult to change jobs. And job advancement is quite difficult as well. Billable utilization targets increase every year and they are already to the point where you are required to work more than 40 hrs/week to meet the target. On top of that there are hours and hours of work that is not billable that you are required to do for self-evaluation at least 2 - 3 times per year.
