Pros

I feel the company is pretty good with the work life balance. Because the company is very advance some are even allowed to work remotely. As an engineer supporting the manufacturing line you could essentially do a good portion of your job from home. The company also provides good benefits at least compared to the other companies I have looked at which is really only two other companies. They also have other little perks like different corporate discounts and rewards for great achievements (eventhough I hear they are not as good as they used to be). I did enjoy most of the people are work with. There are a good number of helpful people with in the company

Cons

It seems there is a lot of backwards thinking in IBM and not just within some divisions. It seems to be company wide. It seems like changes always loop back around someone. The high level managers think they have an understanding of what happens at the lowest level but don't. There always seems to be a different panic attack each day so it can get stressful at times. Pick your day and you have some serious issue going on. The meetings are endless and often pointless. The meetings always make it seems like it's deja vu. There is more time spent talking about the problem than actually going to correct it.

Pros

Terrific breadth of career opportunities - I've worked for IBM since university (12 years now), and I've held 10 different roles, and had opportunity to be part of 3 different start-ups with opportunity for rapid advancement. IBM also offers great flexible working opportunities - I work a condensed working week now that I have children, and my job is mostly based at my home office.

Cons

Strong US work ethic - rare for anyone in my department to leave on time in the evening, and overtime is not paid. Really hard to work part-time in a company like IBM - you really need to have a presence 5 days per week unless you're happy for your career to go on the back-burner for a while... Maternity leave pay is pretty rubbish, sliding scale down to 40% pay (better than a few years ago, but still poor).

Pros

You can be part of something much bigger. Very few companies have the history and breadth and market impact of IBM. Working for IBM means you can be part of a company that sets an agenda in business and society. Plus, you can be attached to some of the great societal work IBM is working on.

Cons

IBM's great strength, it's size and market impact, can also be challenging. It's very hard to navigate within the company to find where one site, where the real work is getting done on a particular project, etc. Plus, it's so big it can sometimes trip on itself. Multiple people are often working on virtually the same projects, so redundant work is common. Finally, processes can be overwhelming.
