Pros

IBM provides a diverse set of opportunities across a wide spectrum of information technology, with considerable resources available when properly aligned. There is the ability to work on significant projects and have a global impact. The company has a long history and many creative and experienced professionals.

Cons

After being wined and dined touring China and Russia, CEO Palmisano came back to US to talk about how "messy" Western democracies are and immediately began shifting jobs overseas at increasing rates including selling PC company to Lenovo. There is a large bureaucracy with lots of internal fiefdoms. Company has gone from respecting employees and striving for excellence to shooting for the middle ground across compensation and benefits. Work can be all-consuming and the wrong immediate management can make life miserable.

Pros

Salary is competitive and often exceeds other local employers. Time allowed for vacation and personal choice holidays is good (if you can actually afford to lose time from work to take it). If you do not abuse it, time away from your cube during the workday to take care of personal business is accepted without even a raised eyebrow. Project assignments can be interesting and challenging.

Cons

Zero investment in professional development. Unbelievably low investment in providing employees with the tools necessary to do their jobs. Physical work environment is substandard. Poor yearly bonus system. Ever-deteriorating product quality due to insanely short development cycles and offshoring to incompetent workers. Low performing employees are tolerated far too much and are often simply passed from one department to another - it's like a government job. Too many layers of management. The bureaucracy would make Kafka cry.

Pros

IBM has some very bright people and some good technology. They allow flexible work hours and location. Benefits and compensation are industry average. Work/life balance is generally pretty good.

Cons

IBM is old and it shows. It doesn't really feel like a technology company. Processes are cumbersome. You can just imagine some ancient mainframe software running the place. I worked in the software business group. The overall feeling was that software engineers were interchangeable. There must be something wrong with you if you wanted to be an individual contributor and liked to write code. Promotions and awards were much more about politics than technical merit. There are too many rules and managers are afraid to push back. Employees are constantly told what they cannot do along and threatened with potential penalties. A couple of examples: print jobs needed to be picked up within 30 minutes or you're cited by security. Office doors need to be locked and blinds drawn when away from your desk for more than 15 minutes. Silly stuff.
