Good on Paper, but Reality is far from it!

Pros

Good perks and benefits packages. You get points for hotels, AmEx Rewards and airline points.

Cons

Where do I start? Well, after having graduated from a prestigious Ivy League school and having worked in some of the most recognizable companies in the world with good amount of practical experience. ATK is probably the worst, due to the political BS. Work-life balance only exists on the paper and partners/principals preach it and say they "believe" in it, but the reality is you're working LONG hours. Additionally, compensation isn't competitive considering you're working a lot more than someone who's working ~40hrs in industry. Hourly rate ends up being about the same for both. Lastly, "likes" and "dislikes" by peers and management determines your future and not what the standard process is for being promoted. Therefore, logic goes out the window. People will go behind your backs and throw you under the bus.

Practical, yet mind-numbingly uninteresting

Pros

- Down-to-earth people, yet also friendly, pragmatic, and smart - A genuine interest, at manager level, to improve junior consultants' performance - Plenty (almost too much) face time with the client - "Green" initiatives being employed at most offices in North America - Offices are very open; partners usually have an open-door policy

Cons

- Simply put, the firm's outlook is horrible. Its hiring strategy in 2009 indicates that the firm is way off-base when it comes to establishing workforce targets and effectively projecting workloads over the next year. - Workload is brutal (~70+ hours), and the client locations aren't much to shake a stick at (want to spend a summer in central Kentucky?) - "Global firm" model means that you could be travelling across the street for a client or across the country on a red-eye; lots of variability - Virtually zero strategy work; it's all sourcing, cost reduction, and IT work at this point - Creativity is simply not valued. A lot of ATK's intellectual capital (which is fantastic) is almost used as a crutch in client engagements - Establishing a positive rapport with the client is frowned upon - Review processes are opaque

Pros

High salary on par with the market, otherwise none

Cons

The company lacks direction, leadership, and morals. Junior staff are consistently worked 14-16 hour days out of fear of waves at will firing with no improvement plans or warning, not based on performance but on political and tribal connections. It starts from the top with partners only looking out for their own self interest and acting immorally (internally sharing confidential competitor information and demanding junior staff to claim days worked as sick days to improve project budgets). Needless to say this seeps into the broader culture of the firm with analysts starting to think that this behavior is normal and “just how it’s done.” There is no sense of community, coaching, or comradery, everyone is simply looking out for themselves. Staffing is entirely unempowered and work depends entirely on social and political connections to partners. Do not put your career at stake by coming here.
