Pros

You definitely get hands-on experience with handling patient samples, maintaining tissue staining equipment, and case distribution. You get into a routine that doesn't change much. Advancement opportunities are available for those with a degree in a science field (biology) -- and this can be a 4 year degree or a 2 year associate's degree.

Cons

Be ready to deliver quality work at very high volumes, day in and day out. Some aspects of the job can involve being on your feet the entire day, but it really depends on the tasks that need to be done. Advancement is more challenging (though not impossible) if you have a degree in some other field that is not biology or chemistry, but you are looking to gain experience in medicine for like, med school applications.

Pros

Outpatient workload is a lot less busy and stressful than a hospital's. My site lets me have an earbud in during the day which is nice. I didn't have to take a pay cut to take this job, despite having little experience. Open-minded management. Good benefits, No weekends, No start earlier than 7am.

Cons

Little wiggle room to take OT if that's what you're hoping for Slower PTO accrual rate than my last employer Doesn't use EPIC, you'll have to learn a few different LIS and accessioning software instead of it all being in one place. Lots of sitting- less active than a hospital lab
