Pros

One of the leaders in semiconductor manufacturing industry with cutting edge technology Good benefit overall Nice colleagues

Cons

Cyclical business environment, down turn layoff still happens. Long working hours in lab with tough deadline can be expected all the time. There are a lot of reviews and emphasizing on presentation instead of actual work, engineer needs to spend a lot of time in lab doing the work but also needs to be able to do fancy presentation and know how to show the work to upper management. A lots of planing works, communications, documentations and meetings even before starting the work, micromanagement happens very often. There are little room for creativity and no room for mistake. Hard work is not guaranteed will get respect from management, and it’s very competitive environment with a lots of PhDs doing the same work.

Pros

Lam seemed like a good company and they were when the revenue was grwoing. The benefits (medical, dental, 401k, bonuses, etc.) are good.

Cons

They talked about the value of the employees, but it was all talk. With the recent down turn in sales, they eliminated most of the contract employees globally (~1,000?), which was understandable. But instead of "weathering the storm", they also recently RIF'd ~5% of the regular work force globally (400-500?) and ~19% in my organization. (Lam hires a lot of contract employees so if there is a downturn, they don't have to report it. Contractors are rarely converted to regular employees and after 2 years are let go. They can return after 60 days if the job is still open. I know of one contract employee that was at Lam for over 6 years having been let go at least 3 times and then hired back again as a contractor.)

Pros

Lam is an extremely exciting company to work. The work itself is fulfilling and the people are so welcoming. The company is growing at an unbelievable pace, it’s so exciting thinking where Lam will be in another five years.

Cons

The only downside is since Lam is growing at such an outstanding pace, work-life balance has suffered a bit. Lam is hiring a lot of talent to remedy this problem.
