Pros

Lots of interesting, diverse, challenging projects in many domains...possible to get different experiences without leaving employer as might be the case with smaller companies; many intelligent co-workers - many having advanced degrees. 9/80 work schedules for many a real plus (alternate Fridays off)

Cons

Stifling bureaucracy (not unexpected due to 1) size of company itself and 2) primary customer being the Federal government; somewhat older workforce not necessarily up-to-speed with current software methodologies (for example, resistance to Agile vs embracing Waterfall software development). Challenging budget constraints likely with cutbacks in defense spending.

Pros

We build technology that saves the lives of people. There are some truly gifted engineers we get to work with at Lockheed Martin.

Cons

Managers have no practical skills related to the teams they manage (e.g. many managers leading software teams don't even have background in software). Management regularly shows a high level of incompetence. It's the good old boys club, promotions and raises are handed out to those who know how to "play nice" with the current leadership team. Daily operations are plagued with red tape, usually red tape that isn't even necessary, it's just "the way we've always done things".

Pros

Decent benefits Support for communities of practice to engage in creativity and sharing of ideas Good HR personnel Good upper upper management

Cons

Incompetent middle and senior management Company seeks technicians over engineers Little room for creativity in software Failing 20 year old practices Long term, little chance for growth or advancement (in both career and personally) Locked into aerospace after too long a time, with great difficulty in transitioning to more "normal" software business companies Big on talk but little on action.
