Pros

One of the most attractive things about Lockheed Martin is the technology that employees are exposed to. As a premier systems integrator, Lockheed has a long-standing reputation for solving large, complex problems, something most engineers salivate over. Lockheed focuses on promoting an inclusive, diverse work environment, a perk not often cited, but one that I've come to really appreciate. The benefits are fairly standard, if not above average and the size of Lockheed allows for some of the best employee discount offerings around. Arguably the best benefit, outside of interesting work, is the flexible schedule that Lockheed offers. Employees have the ability to work their own schedule based on both personal (doctor's appointment, sick kids, etc.) and professional needs (deadline to meet, unexpected proposal to write) as long as they meet 40 hours for the week. For me, that usually means front loading hours during the beginning and middle of the week and cutting out a few hours early on Friday.

Cons

While compensation at Lockheed is fair, other smaller firms may offer more competitive salaries. Also, compensation is very much tied to tenure. While Lockheed is working to focus more on pay for performance, there is still a heavy positive correlation between years in the chair and salary regardless of abilities. As a large systems integrator focusing on systems engineering, work at Lockheed can sometimes get bogged down by processes and documentation.

Pros

Relatively Good Benefits. Very flexible and accommodating. They allow you a good work life balance and allow for flex time and are accommodating if you decide to pursue advanced degree well working.

Cons

The performance review, ratings, and relative raises and promotions are really bad. It is not indicative of the effort or work you put in at all. Sometimes better managers will put in a good word for you and fight for your promotions. But in general most won't bother.

Pros

It is a very good place for a college graduate to start his/her career, especially if he/she gets into the leadership development programs (LDP). LDP practically pays for a free graduate degree and the job rotations allow a person to obtain different experiences in about half the time as a regular employee. Also, LDP does provide exposure to upper management. Overall, the benefits are good. The employee costs for the health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are much less than many other companies out there. The funds available in the 401K are great. The costs are fairly low and many options are available. The company match of 50% up to 8% of your salary is decent. While three weeks of vacation is pretty good, many other companies either meet or beat this number. The company is good with promoting and following life/work balance.

Cons

Not all business units are created equal with benefits that are not regulated by corporate policy. For instance, some businesses allow employees to telecommute and flex their time; many other business units do not. The performance review is based on a quota and not enough is made to differentiate the successful contributors. There really are people who should be fired for poor performance and incompetence that are labeled as successful contributors. Also, you pretty much have to earn new business or perform well on bad programs in order to get the higher ratings and raises (which can be used towards higher health care costs). No matter how sexy program finance sounds, you will not like your job if your program has a lot of earned value management (EVM) requirements.
