Pros

Lots of opportunities to rotate into different areas of the company. International company, lots of resources and good process guidelines. Great place for a young person to learn the ropes from older and retiring engineers. Lockheed puts a lot of emphasis on hiring a diverse workforce.

Cons

While Lockheed tries hard and implements good anti-discrimination policies, the culture is still pretty conservative, especially at the higher levels. Granted, things have changed a lot since the 90's and much more diverse people are climbing the ranks into top management. It still has a way to go. Also, if you don't like the aerospace/defense industry, then none of the defense contractors (Lockheed, Boeing, Raytheon, Northrop) are a good place for you to work.

Pros

You are able to put in 40 hours a week and be fairly paid (a little under paid). The companies leadership development programs are a good entry level program. The program consist of Rotational Work Assignment: Academic/Functional Training Leadership Development Conferences Mentor Program Community Service Involvement Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement, Bike-a-thon, Heart Walk, Space Day The graduation requirements consist of: Complete four 9-month rotations and accept an off-program position Successfully complete Technical Development Curriculum (TDC) I, II, and III Participate in three Leadership Development Conferences (LDC) Complete an accredited technical Master’s degree Overall for the most part managers care about employees.

Cons

LM is not a place for rapid career growth. They don't encourage you to take on positions that you don't have much experience in doing. The culture is to concerned about years of experience rather then a persons apptitude to do quality work and demonstrate good work habits. Most managers don't play a active role in professional development. They will let you to continue to do the same thing year after year without encouraging you to learn something new. It is all about who you know and how much your management team wants you to get promoted not about the work you do.

Pros

Good place to start your career - great opportunities are available to junior employees if you seek them out and perform well. It also provides an excellent opportunity to network due to the ability to move from program to program. Opportunities are fairly endless since its such a large company.

Cons

Work life balance is horrid. Getting a good performance rating is directly tied to the amount of uncompensated OT you work and on many projects, you're expected to work over and above your 40 hours. Not that I mind doing that, but when it becomes the norm rather than the occasional exception its not good for your life outside of work. training budgets are always slashed 3 months into the year.
