The PPD Good O'le Boy Club...

Pros

PPD is using a lot of up to date technologies. The technical work is very interesting. They pay competitive wages.

Cons

PPD Management is a good old boy's club. All decisions of any magnitude are top down pronouncements. Providing technical, or other, kids of feedback to management is very dangerous and must be done with great care. If you are committed to doing more than just what you are told and punching a clock, you'd better be very schooled at navigating a dangerous political environment.

Great place for a job, not a career

Pros

-Extremely flexible work schedule. -In my experience, employees are knowledgeable and educated, and are always willing to share their expertise and knowledge. -My department head has always been very supportive of opportunities for professional development (courses, conferences, going back to school). -Colleagues focus on their work, not on office politics. -Opportunities to work on lots of different projects, so work doesn't feel too routine.

Cons

-Little emphasis on communication and collaboration between groups and departments -Compensation is below industry average; benefits package is decent, not excellent. -While the company is willing to send you to conferences and allow you to pursue professional development opportunities, there is little room for upward growth (at least within my department), so many of these development opportunities seem like a waste (unless you leave the company). I've found it difficult to get on a career path at PPD; I have a good job, but I don't have a career here. -PPD seems very resistant to change, and many processes are antiquated. For instance, PPD just rolled out an electronic performance management system -- it's been paper based up until now.

Pros

Flex scheduling, decent PTO, exceptionally friendly coworkers, experience doing all stages of drug development and testing within an FDA regulated lab

Cons

Some of the Group Leaders are not very effective leaders. My primary Group Leader was always in a terrible mood, never appreciated work done above and beyond expectations, and gave terrible, unfair reviews. I got a 2 cent raise after working for over a year, and this was rewarded to me after I figured out what was causing one particular assay to fail repeatedly and which she took credit for in the end.
