Pros

Large company with numerous large and small programs. Lots of room for lateral movement between programs. This company is absolutely what you make of it. No one will speak for you, or hand you opportunities; a lot of young engineers take too long to realize that. Ask for more work, turn it around quickly, and you then proceed to tell management just how great you did, you'll be set. Rotations exist within programs: ask for them. Get experience, get informed: move up in rank/responsibility. Yearly performance reviews are great, and they give you an opportunity to make your work visible to management. You essentially have to sell yourself (and your work)to them, and justify why you should be rewarded. The peer-based performance review cycle helps with this, but you still need to heavily self advocate; be brash, be confident, and dictate your career. Education benefits are great, granted the department has funding (which they usually do). This is capped at $10k per year, per individual, with some exceptions and extra programs which extend this. Work-life balance can be great, depending on your program and how you yourself work. Hours are generally flexible within the 9/80 work week. Some people come in as late as 12PM, others as early as 6AM.

Cons

Lots of engineers just treading water, because it's simply easy to get stuck doing that. Just turning the crank and never improving can be big within the systems engineering departments, and sometimes management encourages this. Salary can sometimes be lower than competitors, and certainly is lower than the private sector (as expected). Nevertheless, Raytheon has some of the best engineers, and you can certainly learn a lot from any time spent here.

Pros

The first 8 years there would probably get 4-5 stars, but the last 2 years could be rated only 3 stars (see cons). -Interesting technical work (and lots of it to do, in a good way!) -Lots of very talented people to work with -Ability to move within the company to gain experience in different domains -Reasonably flexible hours, 9/80 schedule -Educational assistance -Impressively stable employment for such a volatile industry, layoffs are *very* infrequent and small.

Cons

All years: -Very slow to accept and use new software technologies and tools (but getting better) -Slow promotions, even for top rated employees, unless you are one of the chosen few to be fast-tracked. Then your promotions come really quickly. Very unbalanced in that regard. -Your section/department managers can be at a completely different facility doing completely different work than you. They end up not knowing anything about your performance firsthand. I saw my section manager twice a year, at mid and end of year review times. Last couple years: -Company seemed to be on the downturn in the last two years. Any perk or benefit that they could justify cutting or reducing, they did (including reducing/cutting yearly raises for many). They literally begged employees to find anything that could possibly save a buck. This reduced morale and confidence in the company's future. -Company lost many experienced and talented engineers through voluntary attrition due to the above. Salaries/benefits for people in this category started to lag way behind (by as much as 30-50%!) those outside the company/industry. It could be more of a defense industry-wide phenomenon than just at Raytheon.

Pros

Raytheon has a good work life balance. The benefits are great. If you are looking for a solid career job as an engineer, Raytheon is a great company

Cons

Not many. They are a global leader in the defense industry, but not number one.
