Pros

Co-workers are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Work-life balance is highly respected, flexible work schedule, ability to telecommute.

Cons

Management is more driven towards metrics than doing the job right. Management can be very tactful and in some cases out right disrespectful. Processes and procedures are outdated/incorrect with little to no effort made to improve, several instances of non-value added work (ex. multiple reports than need to be manually created that give the same information).

Pros

Excellent benefits compared to commercial sectors. Leading edge technologies within the R&D organizations. Few significant layoffs, although not immune as funding cycles occur. Where sufficient funding is obtained, process-controlled development for production is exemplary. Where supervisors are good, they are very good and a pleasure to work with and learn from. Great place to start a career due to retirement attrition in upper ranks. On programs with good visibility and when individual contributions have made a real difference, Raytheon recognizes and rewards appropriately.

Cons

Lowest-bidder Government acquisition policies result in under-bidding such that most work seems to be done behind schedule and with insufficient funds. Where funding is insufficient, development for may rely on corner-cutting to meet schedule and cost targets. Corner-cutting of any kind is actively discouraged via lip-service and much training, but harsh reality is day-to-day pressure to produce results puts developers between a rock and a hard place. There are some horrible program cultures and it's important to keep away from these if possible to have any hope of a career.
