Pros

I would recommend doing an internship with Raytheon over the summer because you will get real work to do, you will not just file papers and make copies. Also, Raytheon offers an excellent intern program where you are exposed to all of the various business functions and what they do. Very good for students!

Cons

As far I can see, I did not have any bad experiences at my summer internship. All of the employees were very nice to me and always willing to help me. I would say the biggest con for me is just the commute and the traffic on the way to work.

Pros

Excellent benefits compared to commercial sectors. Leading edge technologies within the R&D organizations. Few significant layoffs, although not immune as funding cycles occur. Where sufficient funding is obtained, process-controlled development for production is exemplary. Where supervisors are good, they are very good and a pleasure to work with and learn from. Great place to start a career due to retirement attrition in upper ranks. On programs with good visibility and when individual contributions have made a real difference, Raytheon recognizes and rewards appropriately.

Cons

Lowest-bidder Government acquisition policies result in under-bidding such that most work seems to be done behind schedule and with insufficient funds. Where funding is insufficient, development for may rely on corner-cutting to meet schedule and cost targets. Corner-cutting of any kind is actively discouraged via lip-service and much training, but harsh reality is day-to-day pressure to produce results puts developers between a rock and a hard place. There are some horrible program cultures and it's important to keep away from these if possible to have any hope of a career.
