Pros

Flexible working hours, friendly work mates, manager in my store is extremely nice, patient and great at his job but is also a good laugh to work with. Also there is an option available to get basic qualification at a level 2 grade.

Cons

I'll start out by staying this, none of the area managers or anyone in head office has worked a day in retail in there life and it really shows. Some of the things that are asked of the staff on the shop floor and tills is just ridiculous. Apart for the actual manager the supervisors tend to be very immature and unprofessional and in one case very petty. Also one supervisor was taken on with no management experience being only a sales assistant in another supermarket , only getting the job because she was friends with someone at head office. In return they have a massive ego problem, tries to belittle everyone, is terrible at her jobs and will lie through he teeth to blame mistakes made by her onto someone else. this isn't a problem that was caused nor can be fixed with the store but only in the area managers or head office. in other areas the rate of pay employees receive is much below other supermarkets like Tesco. Health and safety is non existent along with basic training. the company over all is extremely greedy and hypocritical, for example Hendersons try and make a point how there a morally 'christian' company yet the only holiday/day they close is Christmas day (probably just because they wouldn't cover costs) and there is no change of opening hours (or pay rate) on a Sundays like every other supermarket chain. Another example is at the Balmoral show they are the ONLY stand in the entire show that sells tobacco, and under the counter at that. Even though some of my issues with spar is based on my store alone it does show how terribly ran the hole company is and i have been sent to many other stores when extra staff is needed on multiple occasions, and i have to say my store is still defiantly one of the better ones out there. The only reason i'm still working for spar is due to me being a full time student and need to be able to drive back and forth from classes.
