Pros
The opportunity to serve your country is truly the most rewarding portion of being a Marine. The myriad of leadership opportunities, billets, skills, and responsibilities you are exposed to as a Marine Officer prevents boredom and fosters professional growth. The opportunity to work with others that share the same passion for service and their country is invigorating. The pay and benefits are good.
Cons
Extended time away from the family, constant turnover of leadership and personnel, cookie cutter approach to promotions (One size fits all for officers). No chance for promotion ahead of peers based on performance. Seniority rather than performance or ability dictate promotion. A senior officer with average performance and average ability will get promoted before a junior officer with superior performance and superior ability.
