      Pros

      Excellent opportunity to learn critical trades for application in civilian jobs. Unmatched job security in comparison to the private sector. Best way for those new to any kind of employment to gain experience.

      Cons

      Travel is excessive at best, you will spend at least 6 months of every year away from home, if not closer to eight or ten months. Work environment is very high stress and results in an exceedingly high divorce rate among service members.

      Pros

      Civil Service employees have the ability to carry health care plan into retirement, very small pension however. Great job satisfaction as I work to assist those who are separating/retiring from the military in entering the private sector workforce. Given the authority and tools needed to develop an excellent program, minimal micromanagement. Until recent federal funding cutbacks there was excellent opportunity for professional development and training. This may return as the economy recovers and funding improves.

      Cons

      All federal systems have extensive instructions, requirements and restrictions that you have to work within. Promotion opportunity is extremely limited and frequently requires moving when a position is opened by retirement or departure of incumbent.
