Pros

There is a strong sense of pride in being prepared to help the active duty team when they need an extra hand. For example, following the earthquake in Haiti, many members of the Navy Reserve responded immediately to augment the staffs, ships and other organizations who helped the Haitian people.

Cons

Bureaucracy. Well intended processes which are too burdensome. Short tenure of leaders results in radical changes to styles and goals when a new commanding officer arrives.

Pros

Great upward mobility. The potential to perform a different job every two years. The travel is wonderful and the benefits are outstanding.

Cons

The downside is the work is often stressful and typically you have long days. Furthermore, if you have a family you could potentially leave for a long period of time.

Limited control of where you live or move Pay is far below comparable professions in civilian sector Extended time away from home.
