Pros

Unparalleled leadership opportunities. Great personal and professional growth due to the challenges of the job. Determination and talents of fellow sailors can be inspiring. Sense of achievement.

Cons

Senior management is hit-or-miss with lots of incompetent people in decision-making positions. Nearly impossible to be a top performer and still have a life outside the Navy. Long deployments away from homeport and long hours while in port. "Free" healthcare often poor quality.

Cannot get fire for not constantly producing result so allowed to make and learn from mistakes. Allows personal growth opportunity if you are willing to seek and work for the opportunities.

Cons

Needs of the Navy first. Opportunities are not easily disclosed so must do an extensive amount of homework to find your opportunity and make it happen through the political policies.
