Pros

There is job security. The opportunity to advance is unlimited according to your ability and your drive to move forward.

Cons

You move every three to five years. You are away from family and friends. Spending at least six months at sea is difficult.

Pros

Free travel and training and good personal and professional relationships with peers are the only reasons to work for the U.S. Navy.

Cons

Political rather than professional skills are required for advancement. Unfortunately, those who can do the job must do the job, and slackers are coddled for just showing up.

Pros

World Travel, (I've been to 23 different countries in as short as 6 years). School Benefits (GI Bill just got great, and you can take classes for free while your still in without limiting your benefits). Perspective.

Cons

Time away from home puts stress on personal relationships. Technical positions are under compensated compared to outside pay scales. Biggest influence on pay advancement is Navy need for your particular rating at the next pay grade, and less to do with your skills.
